A planning meeting for the 2012 Bears officers was held Wednesday December 28, 2011 at the Montpelier fire station. Those in attendance were President Elect Keven Nield, current President Gary Roberts, Vice President elect Gaylen Roberts, Treasurer elect Bill Stock and Secretary elect Jocelyn Nield.
It was brought up that we must file with the IRS before May.
Minutes of the December meeting would be required along with election results so they new presidency could be given authority to sign club checks.
Dues were discussed. They are due January first and if not paid by February the individual would be dropped from the club until they have paid their dues. If someone comes into the club part way through the year the fee would be prorated. We discussed a possible agenda. Keven suggested a weather spotter meeting, a demo on Echo link, a radio education meeting, an off the grid meeting and APRS training. Gaylen suggested another idea meeting for Go kits and ARES training. Other suggestions included: a mock emergency using family radios and ham radios involving LDS block captains, a demonstration of IRLP for the public, a simple step by step demo for digital transmission, a fox hunt, field day using high frequency operations, an overall basic “how to” for new and inexperienced operators (changing frequencies, setting p.l. tones, managing squelch, and using memory and regular mode), building antennas and having an open house.
Keven suggested having a spotlight on a different radio at each meeting.
We decided on the meetings for the first quarter of the year.
January: ARES training, bylaw wording change, and spotlight on radio.
February: Pass the changes in bylaws, radio etiquette and digital demo and instruction. We will also check on the interest in weather spotting.
March: Off the Grid Operations
April: We are tentatively planning a weather spotter meeting.
Before leaving the meeting we had a bylaw discussion. It was decided to keep the current $ 18.00 fee for the first family member and $ 9:00 for each additional family member residing in the same household. Time and date of monthly will be posted on the BEARS website.
January meeting will be held January 6th at 7:00 p.m. at the fire station.

B-e-a-r-s Meeting January 6, 2012 7:00 p.m.
Those in attendance at the January meeting of the BEARS amateur radio club were: Keven, Jocelyn, Eldon, Jan, Rick, Joe, LeAnn, Gary, Gaylen, Eileen, Delar, Alan, and Bill. Keven talked about a few possible word changes in the Bylaws to vote on in February. 2012 stickers were given to those who had paid their dues. Gaylen passed out resource material or ARES training. He talked about as ham radio operators we should be involved and be a part of the community. Being certified in Ares would give us the opportunity to serve in case of emergencies.
Alan talked about RACES, the government emergency program. It is closely linked with ARES but they are separate. RACES is more strict than ARES. In an emergency RACES members would be called up and deployed and given a specific assignment. It is a very serious responsibility. As a member of RACES it is imperative for you to be prepared to deploy wherever. He also showed his deployment or Go kit.
The spotlight on radio was on the Wouxum Model 6 which cost about $179.00 and several club members have one and are well pleased with it. It has narrow band capabilities. In 2013 narrow band will be required for emergencies.
Eldon talked about the history of the M Hill repeater and showed his ham walking stick which he could separate and turn into two types of antennas, a beam antenna and a J pole.
